The market of Great Stapleton

The village was built in the 10th century. The market is the social centre of the village. All the important things happened on the market.

The thieves and murderers were hanged on the market. You can also look at the gallows from this time.

The people took the water they needed from the only well in the middle of the market.

The market isn't very spacious, but it is one of the oldest markets in England.

The names of the people, who built the marked, can be read on the stones along the side of the historic place.

In the 17th century a big fire damaged the village. A lot of the people and nearly all animals died and most houses were destroyed.
