When Lindo was three years old she was promised to a son of a rich
family. She lived with her family in a little house near a big river. For
the next years Lindo grew up like a normal Chinese girl but she did not
really belong to her family, she was expelled.
In China it was an old tradition that the daughter's marriage was arranged by her parents. Lindo Jong's fate was not an exception. Her childhood was filled with anguish. Not only did she have to see her family avoid her, but also see the pain in which they suffered. Sometimes she saw her mother look at her very sadly. Lindo knew that her mother loved her, but when she was promised to her intended she could not belong to them. She did not belong to her "new " family either. When Lindo was twelve years old her parents house was flooded by a big storm. Her family went into the city, but Lindo was sent to her new family. There she did not integrate as a member of the family but had to learn how to cook, clean, and sew from the maids, like a normal maid. In her hole life Lindo had to look after herself. Nobody was there to help her or look after her. Her promised husband was a little, helpless, spoiled boy. She more motherly instict for him, than love or passion. Because of the promise she gave to her parents, she had to stay. But some weeks after the marriage a trick helped her to evade her promise and escape. Lindo is not old-fashioned, but her childhood left marks and it surely affected the treatment of her daughter Waverly. |
